Determining Tempos of Dance Music No dance music library is complete without accurate data on tempos. For ease of use, I have appended the titles of songs in my music library to include the number of Beats Per Minute (BPM) for 4/4 music and the number of Measures Per Minute (MPM) for waltz. In addition, I append the MPM number with "MPM" so that I can easily recognize a waltz. (e.g. Blue Skies 130, Moon River 30mpm) Though it only takes a few seconds to determine tempos, there are several shortcuts. Counting beats for 6 seconds and multiplying by 10 is quick, but not particularly accurate. Counting for longer periods can increase accuracy. Using a stop watch and the table below will provide accurate tempos in only a few seconds. Using the Table. Measure the time for 10 beats, find the time in the "Sec/10" column, and read the tempo in the appropriate adjacent column. Note that the MPM column is for 3/4 music, and the BPM column is for 4/4 music. Some of the more popular tempos are in bold. Counting. Technique is important for accurate measure, and many people inadvertently skip a beat, which leads to an inaccurate tempo determination. Counting for 60 seconds minimizes the significance of the error, but counting for only 10 seconds will magnify it. For best accuracy for a 10-second count, start the stop watch on "zero," not on "one," and hit the stop button on count "ten." |
